In 2011, we (Greig McGill and Phil Murray) teamed up to launch Brewaucracy upon an unsuspecting world. Not much happened for quite a while after that. I mean, we made some beers and stuff I guess. The beers were kindly called "niche" by some, and more often called "weird shit that's not IPA" by most. We brewed styles that we love, and often styles that were overlooked by the crowds in their rush to drink the next hazy triple-dry-hopped IPA bomb.
But we love them, and we hope you will too. Read more...
At least, enough of you that it was worth building this big shiny pile of stainless steel and concrete to relaunch Brewaucracy as a bit more of a serious enterprise. If not, we'll see you at the soup kitchen... And yes, we still make the odd IPA too, I promise!
Greig is 179cm tall, talks a lot, and enjoys oysters, English Barleywine style beers, and loud death metal (but also trippy hippy jams - all hail Satan, and Jerry Garcia)
Phil is annoyingly slightly taller, thinks a lot, enjoys hipster facial hair, Belgian Tripel style beers,
and awful 90s cafe music. I bet he edits this.
We're not a pub, gastro or otherwise, and not really a bar. Our taproom is a space which is an extension of our brewery. It's designed for sampling our beers as fresh as they can possibly be. It's here so you can see where and how the beer you're drinking was made, talk to the brewer, and just generally hang out and have a nice time amongst the tanks!
Because we’re proudly all about Hamilton and the Waikato, we also enjoy showcasing some guest beers from other brewers around the region, and occasionally the odd special something from our friends in other parts of New Zealand.
We have food available, because the government doesn’t really get taprooms, but it’s pretty basic! Fortunately we have a rotating food trucks every week, so check our Facebook to find out the latest news. When we don't have a food truck, you’re more than welcome to bring your own though, or even order in! (Note: We ask you to please respect our food truck family by not bringing in food when they're on-site)
You can drink on-site, and we also have an off-license. This means that you’re most welcome to come in and visit, sample the range of beers by the 30ml taster at no cost, and fill containers to take beer away in. We sell US-style branded growlers in 1L and 2L sizes, and we offer a 10% discount on refilling these. We also have plastic 1.25L riggers for just $1 each. If you have your own container to fill, we’re happy to fill that for you also, so long as the volume is clearly marked.
Pro-tip: The bar can get busy, so it’s a good idea to know what you want to take away in advance (see the current tap-list below) and let the bar staff know, so you can enjoy a beer or two while we fill your to-go order. Much better than standing there waiting when you’re done and want to hit the road!
Our 16 taps in the taproom can change time to time, so here's what's on at the moment:
